When is the time for Tatami mat maintenance? There are three types of Tatami mat maintenance. Inside-out : After 4 or 5 years of laying new tatami mats, when the tatami facing is worn out, the tatami is turned over and stitched back together, a process known as "uragaeshi" (inside-out). Refacing : After inside-out and using it for another 4 or 5 years, the tatami facing is refacing in a process known as "Omote-gae". New tatami mat (replacement) : After 20 years of repeated use of turning over and refacing tatami mats, it is time to consider replacing the tatami with new tatami mats when the dents and gaps in the tatami floor become larger and the threads that sew the tatami floor itself are broken.

What is Beegu?Beegu is an Okinawan dialect word for rushes. When grown in the sun and climate of Okinawa, rushes have an abundance of thick, spongy cores, and the outer skin is thick and strong. On the other hand, tatami mats produced outside of the prefecture are considered to be the best, made of thin, supple rushes that are densely and tightly woven together to create an elegant Japanese space. Okinawan beegu is thick, durable, and cool to the touch, making it very popular in Okinawa.

How do you prevent mold on tatami mats?Care during the rainy season : Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to prevent humidity from rising. (Fanning the tatami mats will also reduce mold growth.) Do not wipe with water! (This will increase the humidity and make the room more susceptible to mold.) (This increases humidity and makes the room more susceptible to mold.) We recommend frequently wiping the floor dry with a flooring wiper or similar tool. Do not hang laundry indoors in the tatami room. If mold grows... : Dry as much as possible and remove mold with a rag. Wipe with rubbing ethanol on a sponge or cloth to sterilize the mold down to the root of the mold! (Do not use near fire because of its high alcohol content.) Scrape out the mold with a soft brush, let dry, and vacuum for the finishing touch.
-
What is heat sterilization of tatami?Dry at 90 degrees for 2 hours, including the inside of the tatami mat. If your tatami mat is made of straw, the straw may contain moisture and may harbor dust mites, so dry it at high temperatures to kill the eggs of dust mites. If you are using a lightweight tatami floor made of foam, the foam may deform due to high temperature heating and the tatami floor may shrink. Foam is a material that doesn't absorb moisture well and has very few dust mites, so it's best to dry it in the sun. Check whether your tatami is straw or foam tatami, and decide whether it is better to dry it under heat or in the sun.
-
What is edgeless tatami (Ryukyu tatami)?A normal "tatami" is rectangular, and the long sides are wrapped and sewn with a cloth called "heri." For "edgeless tatami," the rush itself is folded and sewn.
